A lot of people comment on how nice it is. I hope folks understand: just being a prisoner means you're already bearing stigma. In the case of Halden, the gigantic concrete wall is enough to keep you from ever having any hope of escape. So piling gratuitous punishments on inmates isn't necessary; they know they messed up. But they also don't know if they're going to get brutalized, and giving structure and safety is the first thing. You come here, you're not going to slug the first guy you see just to get a rep.

I think the Finnish way to allow police to carry firearm but to require LOTS of extra paperwork if the officers even touches their gun. This results in police trying to talk the criminals as long as possible and when criminals know this too, there will be much less stress for the either party. When you go to all incidents guns blazing, don't be surprised if criminals start to immediately fire back when they see a police. In addition, shooting firearms in city environment is never risk free because of ricochet from any hard surfaces so it's better for everyone if both police and criminals try to avoid firing firearms. The reason it's still important that Finnish police does carry the firearm is that if some criminal is stupid enough to use weapons, police can immediately respond. If the criminal has raised their weapon, then police is allowed to use firearms (it still requires LOTS of paperwork even in that case but in that case the officer can be sure that there will not be consequences to them). Finnish police officers are not free to take the gun from the holster. Even opening the button of the holster requires extra paperwork even if the gun is never removed from the holster! The only thing that makes things very complex is drug addicts. All of the above depends on criminals having at least some sense but a drug addict might be high enough to not understand anything about reality. If they have a gun, it's always very dangerous for everyone.

26:09 "I think their model is fine if you have unlimited budget". Considering how much the prison system costs in the USA, I think Norway model wouldn't be more expensive. It would result much smaller profit margins for the prison owners for sure, though.

Seems that the people of Northern Europe are so spiritually lost that they laugh at even the idea of considering how utterly depraved their society has become. They really do believe money and a sense of material wealth is all they need (sounds a lot like Americans). Not just their society but the Western world as a whole is lost in this bleak moral darkness. Maria Orat Pro Nobis 🙏✝️🇻🇦

Oh no, they have a long education. Peter Whittingham finds fault in that of course, because he is just in high alert all the time. To me he is just talking about formal non important stuff (like beeing shaved) or doing routine without using your judgement. And beeing high alert and tense all the time even in US that can not be the way to act. You will create violence. Sure in certain instances you have to be strict and be prepared, but tbis is from situation to situation. He seems to act all the time like he is going to be shot. And then still does fatal errors if that was true. Like walking to the police car and check the license, that is the time for the perp to shot him (if they would be so violent).

Poor old Marty seems like a typical US American simpleton, incapable of grasping any way of life but his own tragic existence. Nobody has ever accused him of being remotely enquiring or even remotely bright. In the Nordics, our governments make our laws with the consensus of the electorate. The state decides who is eligible to marry. It is no business of a religion. Only the state can marry people, the church simply wails a few magic spells at a ceremony, in order to make some money out of the process.

The answer is yes, Norway continues as usual. I'm a bit lazy, so I use an old answer, if you have any questions, just ask. You don't need to watch the video. How should the wealth in a country be distributed, is Norway doing the right thing? Or......... Why Every Norwegian is a Millionaire. 10.44 ruclips.net/video/5yIF4KSiXLY/видео.html Just a little clarification, he says a government spends about 20% of oil money in an annual budget and that is true. But the correct thing is that the government can use a maximum of 3% of the return in its annual budget. So 97% of the return goes back to the fund. So that means when Norway one day stops depositing oil/gas money, the fund will of course continue.

There's another documentary where 4 years later James actually admits that he was wrong here. He talks about how there was one serious incident between an inmate in Halden in the 4 years. And in his prison, there was an incident last Tuesday. He sits with a few prisoners where one prisoner says "80% of those incarcerated are released. Who do you want as your neighbor? Someone who did nothing their whole sentence, or one who is educated and skilled?"

I also believe that Norwegian criminals aren't as cruel, merciless as the ones in America. They don't usually free grab a gun and kill someone over a parking spot for example in the USA. Also, there's more freedom and liberty in Norway and that's why people don't break a law because there aren't too many laws.
